Baby milestones

Baby Twinkle (yeah, I owe a lot of posts on her) rolled over tonight. I heard her laugh for the first time too. <3

34 Weeks pregnant! 5/19/2012

I'm still swelling, but the compression stockings have helped a lot to keep my legs comfortable. I'm at the point where it hurts to get up from a sitting position. The baby is definitely growing -- I can occasionally feel movement simultaneously on both sides of my belly (YES, THERE IS ONLY ONE), and have noticed her doing flips. I suspect that she's beginning to run out of room.

It was a shock to see how much compression stockings cost, and then I couldn't get a straight answer from insurance about coverage! I ended up finding a website, ameswalker.com, that sold them for less than what insurance might cover anyway. My first order was a pair of maternity pantyhose and a pair of thigh highs. Good thing, too, because I ended up hating the maternity hose (they were so difficult to put on), though I love the thigh highs. I ordered three more pairs of the latter.

As for me, I think I've come down with a cold on top of allergies. I am so miserable right now, and sinus washes and Vicks VapoRub can only do so much. Today is graduation at Birdie's Filipino school, and she's going to be doing two performances. I was desperate and called the Urgent Care line at the doctor's office to see if it was REALLY REALLY BAD to take a Sudafed this far into the pregnancy. They said it wasn't recommended, so I sent Birdie off with her dad, and then rested a little more in the hope that I'll feel more human if I only show up for the actual event. I'm not so sure that I do, but it's time to get ready and go.

Parent-teacher conferences

I was LMAO at the parent-teacher conference for Birdie and Zen yesterday.

This is a writing sample that Birdie's teacher gave us: she was supposed to do a line of uppercase 'J' and a line of lowercase 'j' and someone is not staying within the guide lines.

I would also attach a picture that Zen was supposed to have drawn for his ASQ-3, but he refused to do anything but draw three dots, so they had to score him very low on his fine motor skills. I'm glad his teacher loves him, because he can be impossible sometimes!

Remembering Lola Geling today
I can't believe that I've lived without a grandparent for 29 years already.

I still remember the phone ringing early in the morning before school, picking it up after someone had gotten to another extension first, and hearing Tita Carmeling's voice saying, "Mommy has gone to Heaven," then hearing a devastated wail from another part of the house that echoed exactly how I felt, although I never expressed it at the time, or for many years later.

The next thing I remember is standing outside of the principal's office at St. Paul's with my cousins, telling Sr. Stephen what had happened.

She is the reason I had always planned to move back East from California, no matter how much I loved it there: so that my kids would have a relationship with their grandparents like I had with her.

32 weeks already!

32 Weeks pregnant! 5/4/2012

Swelling of my extremities has begun, but my compression stockings just arrived in the mail today, so we'll see how that goes. People at work have told me that I'm starting to look tired -- even the security guard asked me where I'm parking these days. On the other hand, the baby is doing great. I think she's grown. She still has room to maneuver around, and a few nights ago I caught her kicking her brother as I carried him to bed.

I had a scare a couple of weeks ago, where I felt pressure and pain all of a sudden, as if the baby were going to fall out any second. After lying back down on my left side for a while, it got better. Needless to say, I tried to take it easier that day, but it still happened twice more that afternoon. I had a checkup the next day, and the NP assured me that the baby was not actually going to fall out. I wasn't having any signs of preterm labor, and the heartbeat was fine. Our guess is that Twinkle decided to go vertical, hitting me in bad places.

While lying down I started looking at survival rates of babies at 30 weeks gestation, and it wasn't so bad. At 32 weeks, survival rates (given a good NICU) are about the same as term babies. I'd still like some more time for the baby to develop, though.

Update: Birdie just said to my belly: "Hello baby. You have a mommy, a daddy, a sister and a brother waiting for you."

My funny kids
I noticed that I don't post much about my kids' antics.

Yesterday Birdie told me that her teacher said that it's going to be Pajama Day on Friday. When I dropped the kids off at school this morning, I asked the teachers about it, and they knew nothing about it! But since it's going to be a rainy day tomorrow, they decided that pajama and movie day sounded good, so Birdie is getting her way.

I will need to teach her not to be deceitful someday.

This evening at dinner, I mentioned that one of our friends took care of Birdie when she was a baby while Eric and I went to play poker. Birdie was surprised to hear that I knew how to play poker, because as far as she knew, only Eric went out to play poker. Zen asked if HE could play poker, and I told him that I would teach him when he was bigger.

He said that when he's 4, he wants to wear underwear and play poker.

30 weeks

30 weeks pregnant! 30 weeks pregnant! 4/21/2012 30 weeks! I think she's grown a bit, and she's doing well so far. I'm starting to have issues with hot feet in the middle of the night (and day), and I've had to scale my Zumba moves back so much that it's no longer fun. Prenatal yoga and walking it is, then.

I passed the glucose challenge! Bring on the carbs! OK, perhaps that's not the best attitude to take.

28 weeks!

28 weeks pregnant! 28 weeks pregnant! 4/6/2012 28 weeks, and we've got more kicking. I've also had my first episodes of swollen feet and ankles. It's probably time to bust out the compression socks when it's not warm enough for flip flops. And did I mention that it's the third trimester? Woo hoo!

I have my glucose challenge tomorrow. I took an early one in February and passed with flying colors, but we'll see what my placenta does to me. Of course, I've also been eating like it was just Easter and my birthday a few days ago, oops. I made sure to go to Zumba class this evening and got through the whole thing. The only thing is, ow. Hopefully that, plus a high protein breakfast tomorrow morning, will keep me below the passing threshold. I really don't want to take the 3 hour test because it messes me up for the rest of the day.

26 weeks, on my way to...

26 weeks pregnant! 26 weeks pregnant! 3/24/2012 Here we are at 26 weeks. It's hard to believe that in just a few days I'll be in my third trimester! If Twinkle goes at 39 weeks like her siblings did, I've got fewer than three months to go, and I still have so much to do!

Work has been quite stressful lately, and the baby has probably been getting more sugar and caffeine than she should have. I've been getting less exercise too. I hope I still pass the gestational diabetes test(s) in a few weeks. Regardless, I don't appreciate the new crop of white hairs coming into my head -- not only are they present, but they're growing in wavy so that they stick out even more!

The pregnancy itself is progressing. There haven't been any interesting developments lately, but then again, there aren't supposed to be, so at least that's one thing that I'm not worried about.

Today was a very busy, but very fun day. We started the morning by going into town for dim sum. After that we headed to the Public Garden so that Zen could see the Make Way for Ducklings statues for the first time. He enjoyed them, but didn't want to sit on the Mama Duck for too long because it was cold. I split off from the group to attend the Delta Gamma Founders' Day festivities, and picked them up afterward for dinner at Bon Chon Chicken. Then we went to White Mountain Creamery for dessert.

I'm not entirely sure how much of this belly is baby and how much is food, and I didn't feel like refreshing my makeup before bed. Apologies for my appearance.

I am exhausted.
